Types of Therapy for Insomnia
There are several kinds you can undergo if you do not wish to take prescription medication. These forms of therapy for insomnia include: relaxation, stimulus control, cognitive behavioral, and sleep restriction.
Relaxation therapy is designed for the purpose of relaxation for your body. It is helpful to reduce stress and tension so that your mind can be less thoughtful when needed to be. At the same time, it relaxes your muscles for rehabilitation and to soothe your insomnia.
Stimulus control rehabilitation is basically reconditioning your body to give you a state of mind that your bed is to be used for sleeping and sex only. If you're already doing other things like eating or watching television, now would be a good time to stop as it will worsen your insomnia. When you associate your bed with other things, it's much harder to fall asleep.
Cognitive behavioral therapy is based on the idea that our behavior and feelings are caused by our thoughts. This means that outside of our thoughts, nothing else should manipulate the way you think or the mood you're in. This type is used to heal the mind and teach people on how to influence their thoughts to make them happier and more relaxed.
Sleep restriction is basically what the name suggests. If you're a person who spends hour lying in bed trying to fall asleep, this may be for you. The expected outcome is to be able to sleep the period you want and wake up when you want. The treatment involves going to sleep later and waking up earlier while slowly increasing the amount of time you're asleep each night, and reducing the severity of your insomnia.
