The Herb Valerian

Valerian is an herb that has been used for insomnia for decades. The herb is medically referred to as valeriana officinalis and is a common over-the-counter remedy in France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Belgium.

It differs from sleep aids by the fact that is not addictive. This herb is still not scientifically understood to how it works, but is said to produce a feeling of tranquility. Although, valerian is effective, it is not effective for everyone so trying it is the only way to find out if it will help relieve your insomnia.

You should take this product an hour before going to bed, and note that it takes roughly two to three weeks to become effective. You should also not take this herb for more than 3 months at one time. Side effects can consist of: dizziness, indigestion, headache, and palpitations. It should not be taken with any other form of medication, alcohol, and you should be weary of taking it before driving or operating machinery.

When purchasing valerian you should also know that most people don't like the smell or taste of it as it can be bought as tea or liquid extracts, so capsule form is preferred. If you think this may be an option you'd like to try, consider the capsule form on eBay as it like almost every other product is cheaper in treating insomnia.
